So I was thinking about this idea of brokenness... I've been thinking about it in the context of grace and suffering. I'm in this small group at church learning about how to walk in grace. (Grace, that mysterious Bible word that basically means having empowerment from God through the Holy Spirit to live in the fullness of what God has for us and to be able to say yes to Him.) This past week the topic was how suffering can aid our grace walk when it leads to brokenness. However, it does not necessarily always lead to brokenness. In such instances where it does, it can be extremely useful in our walk with the Lord. Psalm 51:17 says "The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit; a broken and contrite heart, O God, you will not despise." See also Isaiah 57:15.
Anyway, I thought it was ironic that shortly after this study I experienced my own bit of suffering... and while my bones aren't actually broken, I've been willing myself to allow the Lord to break me. I want my heart, soul, and mind surrendered to Him... I want less time spent each day worrying about my capacity for self-sufficiency and more time offered up in sweet surrender. So this mild, temporary inconvience (or as Paul would remark, this "momentary, light affliction") hopefully serves as my on-ramp into God's heart through the path of real brokenness.
